What is the Tequila Trade Agreement? In 2003 Mexico issues a proposal that would prevent the bulk import of tequila into the United States for
bottling purposes. The companies in the US were upset by this because they were saying the Mexico just wanted to create jobs in
their country while Mexico said they want to
guarantee quality of the product coming into our country. Finally, in January of 2006, the agreement was passed. The agreement allows the
continuing of bulk imports of tequila into the US but now there is a "tequila bottlers registry" that monitors the process which helps ensure the process is done in a way as to not lose quality.
